COMEDY OF ERRORS
In his shortest play, Shakespeare crosses the boundaries of traditional genres. At first, it looks like a tragedy (right at the beginning, one of the characters is threatened with the death penalty), but soon the play reaches the position of a farce. In particular, the dialogues between the master and the servant are lessons in what a modern circus clowning scene could look like.
The farce about two sibling pairs - identical twins - offers not only a dizzying pace of twists and turns and entertainment, but also an ingenious play with opposites and paradoxes, which the author has always mastered. In it, he also developed a brilliant reflection on the relationships between men and women, on the meaning of their love and respect.
"In its own way, The Comedy of Errors is a crazy carousel of loss and discovery," says Shakespearean playwright Martin Hilský.
Director Roman Polák was inspired by the silent film era for the staging of this play and its comic grotesqueness - the black-and-white set and costumes are underlined by the musical improvisation of the pianist, who will sometimes manipulate the actions of the characters on stage with his music. Many times, the speed of their movement will also depend on his piano improvisation :)
Approximate duration of the performance, including one intermission, until approximately 11:00 p.m.
